On 30th December, 1995, one of the most glorious chapters was written when the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India dedicated the Koraput-Rayagada projectKORAPUT - RAYAGADA to the nation and since then, the freight trains are running in the section, negotiating 12 stations, 36 tunnels and 76 major bridges. Construction of the first phase of this rail link between Koraput-Damanjodi (20 km.) was completed in the year 1986. With the completion of IInd Phase between Damanjodi and Singapore Road, Asia's biggest Alumina producer (NALCO) was immensely benefited by cutting down the distance of its Alumina Refinery at Damanjodi to its Smelter Plant at Angul. The link has been the much-needed alternative route from Bailadilla iron ore mines to Visakhapattanam Steel Plant and Visakhapattanam Port. This 164 Km. long rail line which has incorporated the unique features of curved viaduct (a bridge over a valley) is an Engineering marvel. The line was constructed in a very difficult terrain and under adverse geographical and climatic conditions. The sanction of Ministry of Railways for running of the passenger services has been received and the same was commissioned from the first of May 1999 and the passenger train services has been taken off in the section. This rail link passing through ravines, valleys, Ghats lush and green forests, and potential tourists spots like Gupteswar, Sabar Srikhetra, Duduma water falls etc. presents a breath-taking view of nature's beauty to the tourists on a platter.
