| GM's Republic Day Message 2008 |
|

| |
On the occasion of the 59th Republic Day, I extend my warm and heartiest greetings to all Railwaymen, women and their families. I also take this opportunity to wish all of them a very happy and prosperous 2008.
At a time when the country is moving towards all round prosperity, I am proud to say that the Railways meet the need of the hour and performs the role of integrating the country irrespective of caste, creed, language, religion and state boundaries. Indian Railways have been lifeline of the nation not only economically but also emotionally which is being run most efficiently under the leadership and guidance of our Hon'ble Minister Shri Lalu Prasad. Our officers/supervisors/staff have proved that under an effective and efficient administration, they can produce excellent results.
Though East Coast Railway came into existence only in 2003, it has become one of the leading Railways in terms of freight loading and earning. It serves the important coal fields and Iron Ore mines of Orissa and Chattisgarh. We shoulder the responsibility of supplying coal to the power houses of South India, finished Steel to South, North & Eastern India, cement and fertilizers all over India. We serve two major ports of the country, namely, Paradeep and Vizag and carry petroleum products to different parts of the country. We also carry the imported coal for the steel plants of the country. We have carried 67.79 million tones of revenue earning traffic up to December 2007 as against 60.57 million tones in the corresponding period of last year; which is 11.92% more. We have to load another 28.21 million tons in the next 3 months for the current financial year. Sufficient traffic is available with us. We have to make our best efforts to achieve the target.
Passenger services:
In the area of passenger services, we provide the link between the East and the South. We carry passengers everyday to places all over India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Patna, Ahmedabad and Guwahati. One lakh passengers originate on East Coast Railway everyday. We have carried 13.55% more passengers this year as compared to last year.
Our corporate objective has been to provide modern, reliable, safe, and customer-focused services to our users. Therefore, human failures causing accidents have to be avoided.
Security of passengers is equally important. Our RPF personnels have been doing a good work in close co-ordination with GRP in this task. Similarly, providing a clean environment to our passengers at stations as well as in trains will be a priority area.
I take this opportunity to congratulate officers & staff of all the departments who have toiled hard to make such creditable achievements possible.
We are also grateful to our customers who have shown upright resilience while partnering progress with the railways. I wish the very best to the management and staff of all our freight & parcel partners for the progress and fast growth of their business opportunities. At the same time, I assure that the railways will provide all the assistance they need in any of their endeavors which encourages efficiency in operations.
In the future:
East Coast region of India is witnessing an industrial upsurge with many industries being set up or proposed to be set up in the near future. It is understood that about 46 MoUs have been signed by Govt. of Orissa with various companies/industries/Agencies for setting up of a number of industries. A number of new ports are likely to be made functional within East Coast territory. To meet the burgeoning demand for transportation of people & freight in the region, ECoR has
planned for the early completion of many of the new lines, doubling, gauge conversion and traffic facility works. Electrification works are proposed for various crucial lines. Completion of these works will remove our operational constraints and enhance our capability to meet the growing need of our customers.
Mancheswar Workshop has continued to show good performance and achieved the best ever outturn of 108 coaches during December’07. Mancheswar workshop has to become one of the premier Coach Repair Workshop in the country for which the planning should start from now itself. We have three Loco sheds: two at Visakhapatnam and one at Angul. The functioning of these sheds is constantly being improved.
The existing Hospital at Mancheswar has been converted into a full-fledged zonal hospital with many modern facilities. Nine Honorary Visiting Specialists have already been engaged for this Central Hospital to provide quality healthcare to Railway employees and their families. While we want to improve quality of service to our customers, we would also improve the quality of life of our workers and their families.
The organized labour unions of this Railway have shown tremendous maturity in maintaining harmonious relations and in the handling of contentious issues. I appreciate their constructive role in taking the Railways ahead.
Our Women Welfare Wing ECoRWWO has been undertaking a number of welfare activities such as managing schools for staff children, organizing computer/yoga training for the families of Railway staff etc. I would urge that more staff welfare activities be started this year. I have been informed that President ECoRWWO has chalked out a plan for taking new initiatives to uplift the families for those staff who need assistance. All members of ECoRWWO have to come forward and provide necessary help to our staff and their families.
In the end, I once again complement and thank the staff and officers of all the departments, members of our recognized unions, Sports Association, ECoRWWO and other wings of the administration for a good performance and urge that a much better performance will be achieved in the times ahead.
